Song for Securing Fair Weather
Sung by Courtney Yellowfat
Song No. 4 • Catalog No. 497
Densmore recording sung by Ziŋtkála Lúta (Red Bird)
From Teton Sioux Music by Frances Densmore:
Ziŋtkála Lúta (Red Bird) took part in the Sun Dance at the age of 24 years, receiving 100 cuts on his arms in fulfillment of a Sun Dance vow.
Red Bird’s uncle was Intercessor in the Sun Dance, and in order to succeed him, Red Bird received his training and instructions.
Red Bird’s uncle was Tȟačháǧula (His Lungs). Tȟačháǧula died in 1868.
“This song was especially favored for securing fair weather; it is one of the songs which have descended from Dreamer-of-the Sun, who died about the year 1845.”

Makȟá ožáŋžaŋyaŋ yaŋ taŋyáŋ hinápȟa nuŋwé he he
may the moon rise well
may the earth appear
brightly shone upon
